No. 2 Women of Troy Storm To Two More Wins At Winter Invite

    Jan. 22, 2017

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC women's water polo team swamped two more opponents today to wrap up the Winter Invitational with a perfect 5-0 mark. Amidst a deluge in Santa Barbara, the Trojans topped No. 5 Hawai'i 13-8 behind a four-goal effort from Ioanna Haralabidis in the morning. In the afternoon, Stephania Haralabidis whipped up a career-high nine goals to pace the Trojans to a 19-5 win over No. 9 host UC Santa Barbara.

Goals from the Haralabidis twins opened up the Hawai'i contest and set the tone for the game as USC opened up a 2-0 lead. The Wahine would punch in a goal next, but that just prompted the Trojans to rattle off the next three goals, building a 5-1 lead as captains Avery Peterson and Brianna Daboub got in on the scoring. One more Daboub blast would wrap the first frame as a 6-2 USC lead, and the Trojans would later grip a 9-4 lead by halftime. The USC defense would allow only one Hawai'i goal in the third while crafting a 12-5 lead entering the fourth, where the Trojans fended off the Wahine down the stretch to wrap a 13-8 victory. Ioanna and Stephania Haralabidis combined forces for seven of those USC goals, with Ioanna tallying four to lead the way.

In the afternoon matchup there was a slight break in the weather, and USC would soak up another solid win to wrap its weekend of work in Santa Barbara. Facing the host Gauchos, the Trojans plunged ahead 7-0 in the first frame -- four of those goals coming from Stephania Haralabidis -- and then opened the second with goals from Maud Megens and Daboub to make it a 9-0 run out of the gates. UCSB got two go in that second period, but the Trojans still boasted a hefty 12-2 lead at the break. Stephania had six goals by halftime and would go on to deliver three more to finish with a career-high nine goals in the USC win. Victória Chamorro and Holly Parker shared time in the cage, going a half apiece, while 10 Trojans contributed to the scoring effort in the final 19-5 victory.

USC will next travel to Riverside for a pair of games at the Cal Baptist Mini Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 28). The Trojans will face Concordia at 12:45 p.m. that day, followed by a 2 p.m. tilt against Whittier.
