No. 2 USC Powers Into Triton Invite Semifinals

    Feb. 11, 2017

LA JOLLA, CALIF. — The No. 2 USC women’s water polo team had 10 different scorers contribute to each of the Trojans’ group play wins today at the Triton Invitational. Led by five goals from Maud Megens, USC opened up with an 18-2 win over Santa Clara to start the day. In the afternoon, Brigitta Games and Stephania Haralabidis each had hat tricks to help lift USC to a 17-4 win over San Diego State. That pulls USC into the semifinals tomorrow (Feb. 12) at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla.

The morning matchup saw the Trojans awake and ready for their opening opponent, as USC punched up a 5-0 lead on Santa Clara out of the gates. The Broncos would break through next, but USC’s balanced scoring continued as Courtney Fahey became the sixth Trojan to score to make it a 6-1 USC advantage at the end of the first period. The distribution continued as Hayley McKelvey opened the second with a goal, and then Santa Clara managed a reply to make it 7-2. That sparked the Trojans to dig in hard, and USC would allow no more Bronco goals the rest of the way. Meanwhile, freshman Maud Megens piled up a five-goal outburst to pace her Trojans to victory. USC scored the last 11 goals of the game and pocketed a second-half shutout with Amanda Longan manning the cage throughout to finish out the 18-2 win in group play.

That moved USC into a matchup against No. 17 San Diego State in the continuation of group action this afternoon. In that one, two goals apiece from Brigiita Games, Hayley McKelvey and Stephania Haralabidis built a 6-1 lead for the Trojans. Brianna Daboub, Courtney Fahey and Maud Megens would follow that with goals to wrap the half as a 9-1 USC lead. In the second half, Annika Jensen, Denise Mammolito and Sawyer Belville joined the scoring party as USC closed down a 17-4 win over the Aztecs. Victória Chamorro covered the first three frames for the Trojan defense in the cage before giving way to freshman Holly Parker in the fourth.

Now, USC is set up to face Michigan at 11:10 a.m. tomorrow (Feb. 12) in the semifinals to fight for a right to the championship match at 5:50 p.m.
