IRVINE, CALIF. -- The top-ranked USC women's water polo team reigned supreme in group play today in Irvine, pinning up solid wins over CSU Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge to move into tomorrow's semifinals. Now 10-0 overall, the Women of Troy are looking to make a run at a second consecutive UCI Invitational championship, going up against either No. 4 Cal or No. 5 UC Irvine in a semifinal clash tomorrow (Feb. 23) at 10:30 a.m.

The Women of Troy set the tone for the day in getting 11 players in on the scoring for USC's 21-1 opening win over CSU Bakersfield. The Trojans would plug in the first 19 goals of the game before the Roadrunners were able to get on the board in the fourth period of play. When the final buzzer sounded, USC freshmen Ioanna and Stephania Haralabidis had combined for five goals, with Ioanna leading all with a hat trick, while four other Trojans also recorded a pair of goals apiece in the dominating win. With her two goals in the win, junior Monica Vavic moved up to now stand alone as USC's No. 9 all-time scorer.

That set up USC for a rematch with No. 10 Cal State Northridge, which the Trojans had shut out 13-0 when the teams first face earlier this month. The Matadors avoided a repeat shutout with an early goal, but the Trojans kept coming and built a 7-1 lead by halftime. The second half would be a bit tighter by the numbers, with USC outscoring CSUN 5-4 down the stretch, but the Trojans' hefty halftime edge had already sealed the deal as USC finished up with a 12-5 victory. Stephania Haralabidis and Madeline Rosenthal were the big scorers for USC in this one, holding a hat trick apiece by the final horn.
