BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women’s water polo team tied the nation’s best women’s win streak with the Trojans’ 46th consecutive victory today, chalked up with a 14-3 win over No. 23 host CSU Bakersfield in an MPSF road match. Ten Trojans scored in the win, a representation of the balance the USC boasts this season. Two freshmen and two seniors tallied two goal apiece to help lead the charge, while goalie Victória Chamorro collected eight saves in the cage. The win improves USC’s 2017 mark to 19-0 and lifts the Trojans to a 1-0 mark in MPSF play.

USC rattled off the first eight goals of the game, building a 6-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and then adding to that to open the second. The Roadrunners broke through in that second period of play, but USC was already well on its way to victory. Senior Brigitta Games and freshman Kelsey McIntosh lit the fuse for the Trojan offense with two goals each out of the gates to make it an early 4-0 USC advantage. Goalie Chamorro came up with a series of big blocks in the second period while USC got goals from Annika Jensen and Avery Peterson to craft that 8-0 lead. After CSUB made it 8-2 by the end of the half, USC plugged four goals in the third and held its host scoreless in that frame. Freshman Maud Megens scored twice in that push to a 12-2 lead, with senior Stephania Haralabidis scoring her first of two in the game and freshman Denise Mammolito adding a goal as well to set up the Trojans for victory. Only one CSUB goal would get through in the fourth, and USC topped off its win with one last goal coming from freshman Elise Stein, giving USC a 14-3 win to add to its undefeated run.

The next action for the Women of Troy comes next week in a trip to Hawai’i. USC will face Indiana on March 16 in Honolulu before facing host Hawai’i the next day (March 17) at 6 p.m. HT.
