No. 1 USC Hauls In A 21-5 Win Over Hartwick

Stephania Haralabidis had four goals and helped USC stifle the Hawks for a 21-5 win.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 1 USC women's water polo team racked up a hefty win at home today, topping No. 19 Hartwick 21-5 on the hands of 10 different scorers at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Stephania Haralabidis had the hot hand with a four-goal effort to pace the Trojans to the big win. USC shut out the Hawks for almost 18 minutes of action as the Women of Troy constructed a 13-goal run out of reach. The victory keeps USC rolling undefeated through 2014, now holding a 26-game overall winning streak for a 19-0 record on the year.

USC got out of the gates with a quick goal from Monica Vavic off a feed from Kelly Mendoza. Soon after, Vavic was the delivery system for a skipper from Kaleigh Gilchrist as USC took a 2-0 lead. Hartwick would get on the board with a 6-on-5 score 30 seconds later to make a game of it, only to see Stephania Haralabidis slam in back-to-back goals for a USC spark. She'd serve up the assist to sister Ioanna Haralabidis next on a Trojan 6-on-5 to get it to a 5-1 advantage before the Hawks hit home to make it 5-2 with 3:22 to go in the first. The scoring frenzy would continue, but it was all Trojans for the next 18 minutes.

Eight Women of Troy combined forces for a 13-goal scoring surge by USC. Colleen O'Donnell, Jayde Appel, Stephania Haralabidis, Jennifer Stiefel and Vavic all drummed up two goals during the rally, which put the Hawks in an 18-2 hole with less than a minute left in the third frame. Hartwick stopped the run with a score from the post by Sami Capparelli -- her second of the day -- to make it 18-3. After eight saves in three quarters, USC goalie Flora Bolonyai would give way to freshman Melanie Slater in the cage for the last period of play, and the freshman made three saves during that stand to help USC wrap up a 21-5 victory over visiting Hartwick.

The Women of Troy now turn to a road trip up north, visiting two MPSF opponents. USC will first take on No. 8 San Jose State at 12 p.m. on Saturday (March 29) before turning to an NCAA Championship rematch the next day. The Trojans will square off against No. 3 Stanford at 5 p.m. on Sunday (March 30) for their first tangle against the Cardinal since last year's national championship game. The match will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
