Sweeps Week: Brigitta Games & Maud Megens Pick Up MPSF Honors

    March 28, 2017

The streaking USC women’s water polo team has picked up its first awards sweep of the season this week, with senior Brigitta Games landing MPSF Player of the Week and freshman Maud Megens collecting USC’s first MPSF Newcomer of the Week selection of the year.

Senior Brigitta Games scored 12 goals across three USC wins last week, including setting a new career high for herself with a seven-goal outburst in a 19-3 MPSF victory over No. 14 San José State. Games’ 12 goals came on just 14 shots, beginning with a powerful turn and finish to contribute to a 12-3 USC win over visiting No. 10 Princeton on Thursday. In Saturday’s MPSF clash against SJSU, Games had a hat trick in the first seven minutes and had five goals in the books by halftime. That first-half effort was a career best for the senior on its own, but she’d go on and score twice more before the close of the game to help secure USC’s 50th consecutive victory. After a brief break, USC turned back around and topped off its home doubleheader with a 21-5 win over No. 18 Hartwick with Games again leading the charge with a four-goal effort. Games is now third on the team in scoring this year with 43 goals tallied for the 24-0 Trojans, and this is the second MPSF Player of the Week pick of her career. She is the fourth Trojan to win the award so far this season.

Freshman Maud Megens scored 10 goals across those three USC wins last week, including a career-high five goals tallied in the win over No. 10 Princeton on Thursday. She’d also collect three steals in that one. On Saturday against No. 14 San José State, Megens scored twice and added two assists to help USC to its 50th straight victory. Soon after, Megens completed a doubleheader day with a hat trick and another assist against No. 18 Hartwick. After her 10-goal stretch, Megens moved up to stand as USC’s No. 2 scorer this season, now with 46 goals on the year. This is the first career award for Megens as a Trojan as she becomes the first USC player to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Week in 2017.

Games, Megens and the Women of Troy now take their 51-game win streak into another MPSF matchup this week. USC will host Arizona State in a 12:30 p.m. conference clash on Saturday (April 1) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
