Women of Troy Wrap Group Play In Rio; Quarterfinals Come Next|
Aug. 13, 2016
Women’s water polo group play came to a close today in Rio, with four Women of Troy helping their teams to first- or second-place finishes in their respective groups.
Trojans Kami Craig and Kaleigh Gilchrist have helped keep Team USA undefeated in group play. Gilchrist delivered her third goal in two games to do her part to charge up the United States for a 11-6 win over Hungary. Team USA finishes atop Group B to move into the quarterfinals against fourth-place Group A finisher Brazil. That matchup will feature three Trojans, as current USC goalie Victória Chamorro is on Team Brazil, playing in her own home town in these Olympic Games. Chamorro’s Brazilian squad came up winless in group play after taking a 10-3 loss to Australia today.
In that Brazil-Australia battle, former Trojan Hannah Buckling stepped up again for the Aussies. She’d punch up a goal to help Australia along to the 10-3 decision over its hosts, lifting the Aussies to a second-place finish in group action. Australia will go up against China in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Spain star and former Trojan Anni Espar has had a firm hand in guiding her squad to a second-place finish in Group B. Spain’s only loss of group play came to Team USA, but the Spaniards quickly regrouped and grabbed their second win today with a powerful 12-8 decision over Hungary. Spain now goes up against Russia in the quarterfinals. All the quarterfinal action starts up on August 15. Schedule is below.
