Trojans Help Team USA To Victory At Canada Cup|
Dec. 9, 2013
USC women's water polo was well represented at the 2013 Canada Cup this past week, with Trojans making appearances for the United States, Australian and Canadian teams. Former and current Women of Troy would square off in five games at the event in Gatineau, Canada, with Team USA getting the late victory in beating Australia 12-10 in a shootout yesterday (Dec. 8).
The championship match featured five Trojans, with Team USA boasting Kaleigh Gilchrist, Kelly Mendoza and Colleen O'Donnell. The Australian squad held two more Trojans who also hailed from USC's 2013 NCAA Championship team in Aussies Jayde Appel and Hannah Buckling. Appel scored once in regulation for Australia, while Gilchrist plugged in two regulation goals for Team USA in helping to force the deciding shootout. Gilchrist nailed her final shot as well to aid in the United States' win over Australia.
Before that, the Trojan trio had also tangled with another former NCAA champion in USC grad Joelle Bekhazi -- a veteran for the Canadian team. Bekhazi scored twice in Canada's matchup with the United States on Dec. 7, but Team USA pulled out the 11-8 victory to advance to the title match. USC's Colleen O'Donnell provided one goal in that one.
In all, the Trojan contingent proved effective for their respective teams across the board, as all six got to the back of the net at least once at the event.
The next big thing for USC's water polo national teamers will be the Holiday Cup, held Dec. 11-15 at Foothill High School in Santa Ana. Current Trojan Kaleigh Gilchrist and USC grad Kami Craig both were named to the United States' roster for the event, which will also feature teams from Australia, Canada, Greece, Netherlands and Russia.
