WEEKLY AGGIE UPDATE - MAY 18, 2008 Utah State's outdoor track and field teams will take the week off before competing in the NCAA West Regional in Northridge, Calif., on Thursday to Saturday, May 29-31. Last weekend, Utah State competed in the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships as the Aggie men finished second and the women placed fourth. Overall, USU won seven events and had 27 top-four finishes during the championships. Utah State began the meet with junior John Strang winning his second straight WAC title in the decathlon with a personal-best 7,083 points, which is the third-most in school history. Senior Logan Moore placed sixth in the event with 5,409 points. In the heptathlon, senior Aimee Sauvageau finished eighth with 4,273 points, while sophomore Jennifer Schiess was 10th with 4,155 points. During the first day of full competition at the championships on Friday, senior Stacie Lifferth-Dorius won her third straight conference championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10.40, while sophomore Steve Strickland took top honors in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:11.16. Heath Wing also claimed a WAC title on Friday, winning the 10,000 meters in 33.23.86. During the final day of competition on Saturday, Utah State won three more events as senior Katie Thatcher won the 400 meter hurdles with a career-best time of 59.47, while junior Keith Williams also took top honors in the 400 meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 51.87. Freshman Chio Lopez was the other Aggie to win a WAC Championship, finishing first in the 5,000 meters in 15:25.64, just ahead of teammate Strickland who placed second in 15:26.25. Other Aggie men to perform well during the championships include freshman Silas Pimentel who was fourth in the 100 meters (10.59); senior Dasheek Akwenye who was second in the 400 meters (46.50); sophomore Jason Holt who was second in the 1,500 meters (3:53.20); senior Chase Taylor who was fourth in the javelin (203-08); senior Logan Moore who was fifth in the javelin (200-06); junior Blake Hadfield who was sixth in the triple jump (48-08); Strang who was second in the high jump (6-08.25); and sophomore Casey Parker who was third in the high jump (6-08.25). Other Aggie women to perform well include junior Krista Larson who was third in the hammer (183-05) and fifth in the discus (151-00); sophomore Erin Stratton who was second in the 1,500 meters (4:35.34); freshman Alicia Holt was fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:39.30); sophomore Elaine Connolly was third in the 800 meters (2:14.03); freshman Kimiko Kamo was sixth in the 100 meters (12.33); sophomore Ashlee Cannon was fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.02); freshman Katelyn Jensen was fifth in the 400 meters (56.06); Vanessa Hawkins who was fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:19.77); and freshman Sonia Grawbowska who was third in the pole vault (12-07.50). |
