Seven members of the Utah State's men and women's track and field teams posted Western Athletic Conference leading times at the Cougar Indoor Invitational hosted by Washington State Friday and Saturday. A total of eight Aggies won events during the two-day meet.
USU competed against Eastern Washington, Washington State, conference foe Idaho, and the USC women.
"I am very pleased with the way we performed today," USU head coach Greg Gensel said. "We had lots of athletes who earned season bests, others who earned personal records, and we won some events. I am pleased with the progress we continue to make."
Sophomore Erin Stratton had the "performance of the meet," according to Gensel. She won the mile with a conference leading time of 4:59.87. With that time she moves into eighth-place on the USU Women's Indoor Top 10 list in the mile.
For the men, junior Nick Karren and sophomore Steve Strickland recorded conference leading and personal record times with their first place finishes in the 400m and 3000m with times of 48.66 and 8:25.63 respectively. Strickland moves into sixth-place on USU Men's Indoor Top 10 list, where he also holds the ninth-fastest time as well.
Karren helped fellow Aggie juniors Keith Williams and Brandon Waller, along with freshman James Allred to a first-place victory in the men's 4x400m, with a conference leading time of 3:17.24.
"We've been having lots of success in the last couple of meets, now we need to keep building on what we've started," said Gensel. "If we can just keep going with this, that's all a coach can ask for."
Senior Amy Egan set a Cougar Indoor Invitational record in the 800m with her first place time of 2:11.95. She also moved into fourth-place on USU Women's Indoor Top 10 list for the 800m, where she currently holds second place.
Other Aggie women who performed well include freshman Maria Halton, whose time of 25.45 ranks her second in the WAC in the 200m. Sophomore Kirsta Larson placed first in the weight throw (16.53m, 54-02.75) and Sonia Grabowska also placed first in the pole vault (3.65m, 11-11.75).
On the men's side, freshman Chio Lopez ran a personal best with his placed first in the mile with a time of 4:17.2. Fellow Aggie freshman Silas Pementel also placed first in the 200m with a time of 22.26.
Next up, the Aggies will head to Colorado Springs, Colo. to compete in the Air Force Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3.
