Nick Karren Tabbed America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete Of The Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's track athlete Nick Karren has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Feb. 10, it was announced on Monday. The award is voted on by a state media panel. Karren, a junior from Duchesne, Utah (Duchesne HS) placed first in the 60m hurdles and third in the 200m with personal best times of 8.14 and 21.66, respectively, at the Boise State Bronco Invitational. The 8.14 in the 60m hurdles is the fastest in the WAC this season while the 21.66 in the 200m is the second-fastest time in the conference this year. Karren moves into sixth place on the USU men's indoor top 10 list in both the 60m hurdles and the 200m. This is the first USU Athlete of the Week honor for Karren this season and his career, but he earned the WAC Track Athlete of the Week award twice earlier this season. Next the Aggies will head to Seattle, Wash. to compete in the Washington Invitational Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16, in USU's final tune-up for the WAC Indoor Championships. Nominees from other sports included: MEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior All-American guard Jaycee Carroll (Evanston, Wyo.) led Utah State to a 2-0 record last weekend with a 77-72 win at Fresno State and a 78-73 win against San Jose State. Against the Bulldogs, Carroll scored 22 points to go along with nine rebounds and two assists. Against the Spartans, he recorded his second double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two steals. Overall, Carroll averaged 24.0 points and 10.0 rebounds and shot 50.0 percent from the field (16-32), 53.3 percent from three-point range (8-15) and 88.9 percent from the free throw line (8-9). WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior center Jenny Gross (Caldwell, Idaho) scored a game-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds in Utah State's 69-42 loss at Hawai'i and then had 16 points and six rebounds in USU's 69-52 loss at Fresno State. For the weekend, Gross averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds and shot 59.1 percent from the field (13-22). MEN'S TENNIS - Sophomore Oscar Ericsson (Stockholm, Sweden) posted a 3-0 record at No. 2 singles as the Aggies lost three matches in Las Cruces, N.M., to Northern Arizona (4-3), Idaho (4-3) and New Mexico State (6-1). He began the week with a 7-5, 6-2 win against NAU, recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win against Idaho, and then notched a 6-3, 3-6, 4-0 (ret.) win against New Mexico State. Ericsson also teamed with Fernando Gallegos to notch an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles against Idaho. WOMEN'S TENNIS - Freshman Hailey Swenson (Salt Lake City, Utah) went 2-3 at No. 2 singles in last week's action as Utah State recorded a 1-4 record. In USU's 6-1 win at Idaho State, Swenson won both her singles and doubles matches in straight sets. Swenson then recorded a 6-2, 6-7, 10-6 win against Idaho's Barbara Machiocha as the Aggies lost to the Vandals, 5-2. WOMEN'S TRACK - Senior Amy Egan (Latrobe, Pa.) won the 800m with a WAC leading time of 2:10.33 at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Boise State during the weekend. That time in the 800m ranks second all-time in school history. GYMNASTICS - Freshman Lyndsie Boone (Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) competed in the all-around for the first time this season, placing fifth with a 38.475, as Utah State finished third in a quad meet Saturday at Denver, behind sixth-ranked Oklahoma and No. 13 Denver. SOFTBALL - Sophomore Emily Reilly (Portland, Ore.) hit .308 (4-13) in Utah State's first competition of the 2008 season. Her best game of the weekend was against Portland State as she went two-for-three. She also posted a hit against No. 6 Tennessee and was the only Aggie to record a hit against No. 2 Texas A&M. 2007-08 Utah State Athlete of the Week Winners
