Amy Egan Breaks School Record As Aggies Compete in Husky Classic
Feb. 16, 2008
LOGAN, Utah - Senior Amy Egan raced to a school record-breaking finish in the 800m as the Utah State track and field teams competed in the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington on Saturday. USU also sent part of the team to the Boise State Team Invitational where the Aggies had five event winners. Egan's second-place finish with a time of 2:08.27 moves her into first-place on the school record list in the 800m and also makes her an NCAA provisional qualifier. Egan finished behind All-American Lavera Morris of Kentucky who finished in 2:06.74. "We had a lot of season bests, personal bests and a school record. A lot of athletes are leading the conference. We are peaking at the right time," said USU head coach Gregg Gensel. Other highlights from the women came in the 200m where freshman Katelyn Jensen finished 10th with a time of 25.20, sophomore Ashlee Cannon placed 21st with a time of 25.66 and freshman Kimiko Kamo was 24th with a time of 25.72. Cannon's time of 25.66 is a personal best this season. "I told the kids this is your last chance to prove that you are one of the people that we need to take to the conference meet," Gensel said. "I think we are on the right track." Three Aggie women, junior Katie Thatcher, freshman Camille Fehlberg and sophomore Erin Stratton, recorded their season bests at the meet in the 400m and mile run. Thatcher finished 11th in the 400m with a time of 57.03 and Fehlberg came in 20th with a time of 57.76. Stratton finished 24th in the mile at 4:57.87. On the men's side, freshman Silas Pimentel placed 10th in the 200m with a time of 21.63. Pimentel's time is the fifth-best on the men's indoor top 10 list. Junior Nick Karren came in fifth-place in the 400m with a time of 47.55 and junior Keith Williams finished 21st with a time of 49.22. Both Karren's and William's times are their personal bests for the season. Karren's time makes him an NCAA provisional qualifier as well and is the fastest in the WAC to date. Karren also competed in the 60m hurdles and finished 10th with a time of 8.21, which moves him into seventh-place on the men's indoor top 10 list for the 60m hurdles. Junior Blake Hadfield was the only field athlete to compete in the meet, finishing 16th in the men's long jump with a 22-05.00 jump. At the Boise State Team Invitational, freshmen Alicia Holt and Sonia Grabowska recorded personal bests for the season in mile and pole vault. Holt placed first in the mile with a time of 5:12.64 and freshman Justine Baugh finished fourth in 5:21.18. Grabowska finished third with a height of 12-9. Sophomore Jennifer Scheiss finished in first-place in the women's high jump with a height of 5-5, senior Aimee Savageau took second with a height of 5-3.25 and junior Tara Pickett took fifth with 5-1.25. Another first-place finisher was sophomore Krista Larson in the women's weight throw with a distance of 54-10.25. Highlights from the men's side in Boise were freshman Eric Larson's first-place finish in the mile with a time of 4:19.20 and sophomore Jared Glenn's second-place finish in the 3000m with a time of 8:50.53. Larson's time is his personal best and Glenn's time is his best this season. The Aggie track and field teams will take a break this coming weekend to prepare for the WAC Championships, which will be held Thursday, Feb. 28 - Saturday, March 1 in Boise, Idaho. -USU- University of Washington Husky Classic Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 Seattle, Washington Dempsey Indoor Arena WOMEN: 60 Meter (preliminaries): 17.
