Akwenye Tabbed WAC Men's Track Athlete Of The Week

March 24, 2008

LOGAN, Utah - Dasheek Akwenye has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday for the week of March 17-23.

Akwenye, a senior from Windhoek, Nambia, (Centaurus HS), clocked an NCAA regional qualifying time of 47.24 in the 400-meter dash at the Arizona Willie Williams Classic in Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday, good for third place and ninth all-time in Utah State history. He also holds the No. 5 spot on the USU bests list with a 46.68 clocking last year. Akwenye also anchored the 4x100-meter relay that finished second with a time of 41.35 and was also 15th in the 200-meter dash in a 22.13 time.

This is the first career WAC Outdoor Athlete of the Week honor for Akwenye. He placed second in the 400 meter run at last year's WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships and was also a member of the second-place 4x400 meter relay team.

Akwenye and the Aggie track and field team have the weekend off before returning to action on Friday, April 4 in the Brigham Young Invitational at Provo, Utah.
