USU Football Press Conference Quotes (10-9-06)
Oct. 9, 2006 LOGAN, Utah - UTAH STATE FOOTBALL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES Head Coach Brent Guy On the Fresno State game "For us any win is a good win. This was especially a great win because of the team we played and the type of team that they are. They are a physical, athletic football team that has dominated this league for many years. For us to be able to hold them to 12 points, which has been 60 games since that happened, for us to be able to play that type of defensive game and give ourselves a chance to win was the most encouraging. On third downs we held them to four of 16. That was the difference and they couldn't continue drives. To win it in the fashion we did, in the final drive, to overcome the (offensive) pass interference and throw it in there on third and 22, those are the magical things that you can't say as a coach that you game-planned for. The kids made plays when they had to and that is what we have been waiting on. That is what we have to build on. That is what we can get out of this game. We certainly haven't arrived, but we put a building block in place that was critical for this program to get started in learning how to win and by winning this game in the fashion that we did. A low-scoring, physical game that our offense had to score on the last series and the defense had to hold up." On Ben Calderwood winning WAC player of the week "It is like I always tell those guys, when you win, don't worry about the individual stuff, there is plenty of glory to go around. I am glad that it was a defensive guy that got it because even though everyone is infatuated with Riley (Nelson) and what is happening with the offense, I really truly believe that holding Fresno State to 12 points was a very significant thing. Having a defensive guy win it, helps support that. You have to play great defense in this league, especially against the run. Had it not been for the snap over our heads (on a punt), we would have out-rushed them. That is pretty significant when you rush the football for more than Fresno State. We wanted to play that style of game with them, where we were going to run at them and try to be physical just like they were trying to be physical with us." On motivation for the Fresno State game "I hate to say it, but when Arkansas beat Auburn (earlier Saturday), our kids were at home and were watching that game. When they came back for pregame, that was all they were talking about. It kind of validated for them two things. That is the type of game we were going to play, like we played against Arkansas and look what they did to Auburn. They sacked Auburn five times and they didn't sack us once. They held their rusher to 60 yards and we rushed for 100 yards. They scored 24 points. We held them to 20. That was the second-ranked team in the country that Arkansas did that two. Their effort and what they did on the road inspired us a lot. It gave us confidence, that we played against a real good football team and did the things necessary to win it. We have got to score points, but when they saw that, it was an inspiration to our guys that we are not as bad as 0-5 looks on paper. We have the ability to make plays. We came out and played inspired. We talked all week about how we have to believe in four quarters and get into the fourth quarter. That is the first time we have won in the fourth quarter. It was the first time we had a chance to win in the fourth quarter. All of those things came to fruition this week. We have got to do something with it now. That is the big coaching point for me." On Riley Nelson "Riley managed the game very well for us. Riley still made a lot of mistakes. The first play of the game he doesn't put Marcus (Cross) in motion. We practiced that all week. There are little things like that out there that he is still doing, but aren't noticeable enough for people in the stands. He will get better at it. It doesn't rattle him. He stays in the game. He misses some signals or calls the wrong play occasionally and he didn't make every throw perfectly, but he made the one he needed to in the end, and the run he needed to in the end to win the game. I think that more than anything, especially in the fourth quarter, the way he played, the guys saw that in his eyes - the competitive spirit he has - he is a guy that believes he is going to win every time." On San Jose State "They are doing a really good job giving (the quarterback) the good, nice, easy throws. They are doing a lot of the quick stuff and throwing it out. They have some receivers that are really catching the ball and making nice plays. They are doing a good job in what he (quarterback) can do." "They are real efficient in what they are doing." * * * * * Defensive End Ben Calderwood On earning WAC Defensive Player of the Week "I think it is more of a compliment to the rest of the defensive line. I couldn't do it by myself. The tackles were out there taking on double teams all night long. I didn't do it by myself... I was just fortunate enough to get the tackles." On the Fresno State game "It was extremely fun. The time went by quick. We were out there having fun. Coach talked about how we needed to stop them on third down and get them in third and longs. We worked on our pass rush all week and tried to get pressure on them and make them get rid of the ball early and hopefully that helped." On the team after a win "We have to be careful. You don't want to let your emotions get too far out of reach. You don't want to think that you are all of a sudden unbeatable. We need to focus in and we need to go to work like we go to work every week. We need to come out Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and practice really hard because the teams we are going to face are all conference teams and they are going to come out and play just as hard. It is nice to get a win and give confidence to your team, but you don't want to get too over-confident." On San Jose State "They run a lot of zone and we have got to stay focused and know what guys we have on the zone, whether it is the quarterback or whoever. You have to stay focused in. When you face a zone (offense) you have to really be focused in." |
