USU Football Press Conference Quotes (10-16)
Oct. 16, 2006 USU FOOTBALL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES Head Coach Brent Guy On the San Jose State game "Two times in the WAC we had a 14-point lead that we can't hold or can't continue making the same type of plays we made. That is the most disappointing. In the end, San Jose State made bigger plays than we made on offense to score the point necessary to win the game... The way we are playing, the style we are playing right now, all of our games are going to come down to fourth quarter games hopefully. We possessed the football 13:38 longer than San Jose State did, which should mean more points than what we are getting. We need finish drives and convert some of those third and shorts. What was amazing about the football game, was that we had eight third and one, two or threes. That is normally one or two. We converted five of them, but the three that we didn't were the three that hurt us the worst. They were in the second half." "The thing that I feel good about is that we challenged the kids that we had to go to their place and beat them at their own game. For San Jose State that had been turning the football over. They were leading the country in turnover margin and we were plus three coming out of the game and could have had three more." "The difference to me was James Jones, their receiver. He caught eight balls. He had the big 50-yard play right after a change of possession when they got the ball at midfield and threw it to him. I thought he was the difference in the game. They had five 20-plus yard plays and we made one." On the Offense "We have got to get bigger plays. We have got to make guys miss. We had only one explosive (20-plus yard play), that was the throw to Kevin (Robinson) late in the game to get us down there to give us a chance to tie it up. (Running backs) Marcus (Cross) and Antraun (McDaniel) have to be guys we get explosives out of. We got 100 yards out of the tailback position, but didn't get any explosives out it. We got one out of Riley (Nelson), but it got called back. We had one with Kevin (Robinson). We have got to get more. We have to have four a game, like we did against Fresno to have a chance to win some of these WAC games. In the end, that is what continues drives. We are not going to always be able to go out and have 12-plays, 80-yard drives. Those don't happen that much. You need explosives along the way, like (San Jose State) did to score 21. That is where we are still lacking on our offense." On Louisiana Tech "Nobody would want Jack Bicknell's schedule. They have eight road games. They have some guys hurt because of the games they have had to play and they are playing on the road. They will be hungry because they are starting conference play and lost their first game. This is the first time they have got to stay home two weeks in a row. That will be an advantage for them." On the game "It is a big game for both of us. It is a game that you have to say for both teams is a must win game for us with the situation we are in." "It will be the same style of game that we have played against all these teams. Turnovers are going to be a big factor. I am sure they are going to concentrate on that this week after just having eight turnovers. We have got to finish drives and not give up big plays for touchdowns on defense and we will have a chance to win the football game." |
