USU Press Conference Quotes (10-30-06)

Oct. 30, 2006

LOGAN, Utah - USU FOOTBALL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Head Coach Brent Guy

On Last Game at Louisiana Tech

"The most disappointing thing for us was it was the first game in the WAC that we started off so slowly, so poorly and started with a 17-point deficit and played form behind the rest of the game and gave up too many big plays with points on the end of them. Our defense had been playing better and better each week and had a collapse and gave up big throws and big runs and never gave ourselves a chance to win. We had two turnovers early in the game, which we had not done and created some field position for them. We started with a deficit and dug our way out of it by halftime - it was 24-14 - then we come out and kick the ball out of bounds and they start at the 35 and score on the second play and make it a three-score game so we were playing from behind the whole rest of the game. That was probably as frustrating a game that we have played in the WAC to date. We started just the opposite of what we had been doing. We had been starting pretty fast and then hanging on and giving ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter and we didn't do that against Louisiana Tech."

On the Bye Week

"We started working on Hawai'I, but we also went against each other a lot on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday so we could keep the speed of the game... We had a chance to get some guys back for Hawai'I (that were injured)."

On Hawai'i

"They are on a roll right now. It is amazing how many yards they are leading the country with right now. Colt Brennan has thrown 311 passes and thrown only five interceptions. That is probably the most amazing statistic of all when you throw the ball that many times. You would think you would have some tipped or dropped that would be intercepted. They block a lot more down field and create bigger plays after they catch the football... They catch a bubble screen and turn it into a 30-yard play, where it used to be a four or five yard play...

On What The USU Offense Is Going To Need To Do

"You are going to have to score a lot of points and possess the football. They had 10 possessions against Idaho and scored on six in a row. You have to get them out of rhythm and get them off the field, like a three and out and you have to keep the football on offense so they can't get in a rhythm. They are very efficient in just working the ball down the field. They take what you give them and keep working it down the field... They are very effective with their offense right now."

On Last Year's Game Against Hawai'i

"We didn't play very well at all. (QB) Leon (Jackson) got hurt that game. We didn't play well at all in the first half and gave up 30 something points in the first half. We have got to play the same style of game that we played most of the WAC games where we control the football, score points in the first half and give yourself a chance to win in the fourth quarter... We have got to execute better. We can't turn the football over like we did against Louisiana Tech early in the game, and especially not give up the big plays."

On The Defense

"We are going to be challenged in the secondary. We have given up a lot more big plays in the passing game than we have in the run game. This is the best team in the country in throwing the football. This will be a big challenge for our secondary."

LB Paul Igboeli

"Having a bye week gave us a chance to get our legs back. We have been going for eight weeks now. Hawai'I is an explosive offense so our defense has to be on point in order to stop them and I think we can do it."

"They are pretty explosive to say the least. We have to control their receivers and contain their quarterback. Hopefully we can get to him a couple of times so he doesn't have the opportunity to throw the ball down field like he has been doing."
