Jenny Gross Named WAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's basketball player Jenny Gross has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week it was announced by the league office on Monday. Gross was also named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week, which is voted on by a state media panel, for the period ending on Sunday, Feb. 24. It is the first time in her career Gross has been named WAC Player of the Week. Gross is also the first Aggie this year to be honored by the conference. Overall, it is the third time that a Utah State player has received the weekly honor from the league office in the past two years. Gross is the second player this season to earn Utah State Athlete of the Week honors as Danyelle Snelgro was named the USU Student-Athlete of the Week on Dec. 10. Gross, a 6-2 senior forward from Caldwell, Idaho (Vallivue HS) led Utah State to a 2-0 record over the weekend, as the Aggies defeated Nevada, 56-48, and WAC-leading Fresno State, 44-40, at home. She scored 13 points against Nevada to go along with seven rebounds and three assists, and was two points shy of her career-high as she had 17 points against Fresno State. She also had six rebounds, two blocks and two steals against the Bulldogs. For the week, Gross averaged 15.0 points and 6.5 rebounds, while shooting 70.6 percent from the field (12-17) and 75.0 percent from the free throw line (6-8). Gross also played in her 100th career game against Fresno State and ranks ninth all-time in career games played. On the season, Gross is averaging 9.4 points and a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game and is shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 70.6 from the free throw line. She ranks seventh in the WAC in field goal percent, 12th in free throw percentage, 13th in rebounding and 18th in scoring. Utah State, who is 9-16 on the season and sixth in the WAC with a 5-8 league record has now won three straight games. The Aggies continue action on Thursday, Feb. 28 as they travel to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m. (MT) in USU's final regular-season road game. Other Nominees for USU's Student Athlete of the Week included: MEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior All-American guard Jaycee Carroll (Evanston, Wyo.) led Utah State to a 1-1 record last week with a 70-67 loss at San Jose State, followed by a 72-59 win against UC Santa Barbara. Against the Spartans, Carroll scored a game-high 31 points to go along with eight rebounds. Against the Gauchos, he added 15 points five rebounds and five assists. For the week, Carroll averaged 23.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists, while shooting 48.6 percent from the field, 45.5 percent from three-point range and 87.5 percent from the free throw line. GYMNASTICS - Freshman Nicole Simoneau (Manchester, N.H.) tied for fourth on the bars with a 9.825 in Friday's tri-meet at Utah with Southern Utah, as the Aggies finished in third with a team score of 189.650. It is the seventh time in eight meets that Simoneau has posted a 9.800 or higher on bars. MEN'S TENNIS - Sophomore Oscar Ericsson (Stockholm, Sweden) won at No. 2 singles as Utah State fell, 5-2, to Nevada at home on Saturday. Ericsson defeated Nevada's Benjamin David, 6-2, 6-0. WOMEN'S TENNIS - Sophomore Britney Watts (Salt Lake City, Utah) went 1-1 at No. 4 singles over the weekend, as Utah State fell, 5-2, to Weber State on Thursday and were swept, 7-0, at Utah on Saturday. Watts defeated the Wildcats' Greyce Farias, 6-3, 6-1, and fell, 6-2, 6-0, to the Utes' Leigh Walsh.
