Utah State Finishes Fifth At WAC Gymnastics Championships

BOISE, Idaho - With a 194.150 score, Utah State finished in fifth-place at the Western Athletic Conference Championship, held Saturday at Taco Bell Arena, hosted by Boise State. Senior Megan Tschida was co-WAC champion on floor and she was joined by four teammates in earning all-WAC accolades.

Host Boise State won the team title with a 194.925, while San Jose State was second at 194.725. Southern Utah tallied a 194.575 for third, while Sacramento State was fourth at 194.275, followed by Utah State's 194.150 and Cal State Fullerton's sixth-place finish at 192.650.

Tschida notched a 9.925 on floor to tie for first with Boise State's Hannah Redmon, who went on the win the all-around title. Joining Tschida on the first-team all-WAC list was sophomore Heather Heinrich's tied for third-place finish on beam with a 9.825.

Four other marks earned USU gymnasts second-team honors, led by freshman Nicole Simoneau, who was tied for fourth on bars with a 9.775, while junior Nicky Felley was fifth in the all-around with a 38.925 and was tied for sixth on beam with a 9.800. Freshman Jasmine Minion rounded out the Aggie honorees with a 9.800 on vault, good for a tie for sixth.

At the conclusion of the meet, Boise State's co-coaches of Neil Resnick and Tina Bird were named the WAC Coaches of the Year, while Hannah Redmon of Boise State was tabbed the both the WAC Gymnast of the Year and the WAC Freshman of the Year.

USU opened the six rotations on bars, as senior Katie Omann led off with a 9.650, while freshman teammate Chelsea Marquardt later posted a 9.675. Fellow freshman Nicole Simoneau closed out the rotation with a team-best 9.775, giving Utah State a 47.925 after one event.

The Aggies moved on to beam for the second rotation, as Felley opened with a season-high 9.800, just shy of her career-best 9.825. Freshman Lyndsie Boone followed with a 9.725, preceding Omann's 9.650 before Heinrich wrapped up USU's order with a season-best 9.825, also just shy of her career-high of 9.850. Utah State ended with a 48.550 on beam to tally a 96.475 after two rotations.

For the third rotation, USU had a bye, and the Aggies found themselves at the bottom of the six-team standings at the halfway point of the meet. Boise State led with a 98.175, followed by Sacramento State in second at 97.375, just ahead of Southern Utah's 96.325 for third. Cal State Fullerton was in fourth at 96.900, followed by San Jose State's 96.700 in fifth and Utah State's sixth-place 96.475 score.

USU migrated to floor for the fourth sequence, as senior Ana Rickard-Whitfield started things off with a 9.675, followed by Boone with a 9.800. Freshman Jasmine Minion later logged a 9.800, preceding a 9.700 from Felley then Tschida completed the rotation with a season-best 9.925, USU's highest score this season not only on floor but on a single event overall. The Aggies notched a 48.900 as a team on floor, tied for the third-best posting of the year in the event.

On vault for the fifth rotation and its final apparatus of the night, Utah State opened with a 9.675 from Boone, followed by a 9.750 from Felley. Omann then posted a season-best 9.775. Freshman Jackie Dillon was next with a 9.675, then Heinrich's 9.775 before Minion rounded out the event with a 9.800.

USU had its second bye of the night in the final rotation, ending with a 194.1, the Aggies' third-highest posting this season and Utah State had its five best scores of the season in the final five meets of the year.

While the Aggies won't be advancing to the NCAA Regionals, marking just the fifth time in USU's 31-year history of the program at the Division I level, several USU individuals are expected to be selected. The announcements for who qualified for the North Central meet on April 12 at Minneapolis, Minn., will be made early next week.
