Adams State, winners of five straight NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country National Championships and 13 overall, has been named the 2007 NCAA Division II USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country All-Academic Team of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today.
The Grizzlies, led by seniors Tanya Gaurmer and Brittany Somers, picked up their fifth NCAA crown in impressive fashion in November defeating the runner-up by an NCAA record 115 points as all five of Adams State's scoring runners finished in the top 25. Gaurmer finished third for the Grizzlies while teammates Somers, Lavenna Mullenbach, Ashley Quintana and Heather Wood finished seventh, 11th, 18th, and 24th respectively.
As impressive as the Grizzlies have been on the course, they have been just as impressive in the classroom as they boast a team 3.5 cumulative grade point average. Adams State also earned the nod for the 2006 All-Academic Team of the Year.
In all, 100 women's Division II institutions achieved All-Academic Team recognition for 2007. Of those 100 women's programs, 12 came from Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, 10 from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and nine from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association had eight All-Academic Teams on the list while the Great Lakes Valley Conference had seven All-Academic Teams on the list.
Over the past three years Division II women's cross country institutions have received a total of 287 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team awards, an average of 95 institutions per year. During that same time frame 79 percent of the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship field has achieved this same honor.
that competed at the 2007 NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships achieved All-Academic Team status, including nine of the top ten.
To be eligible for the honor, teams must list all student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and who have competed in 50 percent or more of the cross country competitions on the team's schedule. Additionally, the team must compete at the NCAA Division II regional championships and have a team cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
