NEW ORLEANS - After opening up the 2008 outdoor season rankings as the top team in the country, the UC San Diego Tritons have kept that ranking (340.87 points) in the latest installment of the women's USTFCCCA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Coaches Power Rankings, the association announced Thursday morning.

The Triton women are coming off a big performance at home after defeating Point Loma Nazarene by 89 points at last weekend's UC San Diego Divisional Challenge. UCSD was led by senior pole vaulter Christina Sloyer who broke the school record when she cleared a Division II provisional height of 12'5.5". Also leading the way for the Triton women was the 4x100-meter relay team which also broke a school record after running 47.00 seconds.

Two weeks ago UCSD jumper Whitney Johnson broke a school record after leaping 42'2" at the Cal-Nevada Championships. The mark is the top triple jump in Division II this year. Johnson also has the second best long jump mark in the country as well (18'5").

Following UCSD is Abilene Christian which picked up 313.51 points in the rankings this week. The Wildcats are led by their outstanding distance runner, Winrose Karunde, who won two events at last week's Texas Relays. The freshman won the 5000-meter event on Wednesday night with the second best time in Division II (17:04.30). Two days later she was back on the track again, this time winning the 3000-meter steeplechase with a Division II leading time of ten minutes, 29.81 seconds.

ACU's 4x400-meter relay team also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II national meet after running a Division II leading three minutes, 40.80 seconds.

Third-ranked Angelo State, fourth-ranked Central Missouri and fifth-ranked Kutztown University complete the women's top five.

Missouri Southern State begins the bottom five at No. 6 in this week's rankings, followed by East Stroudsburg at No. 7 and No. 8 Lock Haven University. Fort Hays State and the University of Mary complete the top ten in the women's coaches' power rankings.
