NEW ORLEANS - Saint John's University senior Chris Erichsen has been named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association's NCAA Division III Cross Country All-Academic Athlete of the Year.
Erichsen, the 2007 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year and USTFCCCA Central Region Athlete of the Year, won the 2007 MIAC and the Central Regional title before finishing third at the NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships.
Erichsen was also a member of the 2005 and 2006 USTFCCCA Division III Cross Country All-Academic teams. Two of Erichsen's teammates, Kelly Fermoyle and Zach Hunter, were also named to the 2007 All-Academic team.
"Without solicitation on my part, Joe Friedrich, an economics professor, told me how much he enjoys having Chris in his class. Then he also told me how much he enjoys having Kelly Fermoyle and Charlie Sawyer, also cross country runners, in his class," said St. John's head coach Tim Miles. "I think Chris and, more generally, most all cross country runners, represent the very best in what we hope for in a student-athlete: training well and competing hard, and then bringing that same work ethic, curiosity, and respect into the classroom," added Miles.
A total of 150 male student-athletes received the honor in 2007. In 2006 114 male student-athletes received the award.
NCAA Championship runner-up Haverford placed five student-athletes on the team, as did Nebraska Wesleyan. Amherst College, Luther College, MIT, Tufts University and Willamette University each had four student-athletes on the team.
The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average and must finish in the top 25 percent of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.
Willamette's Sarah Zerzan is the 2007 NCAA Division III USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
