Wisconsin-La Crosse and Whitworth Tabbed as 2008 Division III Men's Track and Field Scholar Teams of the Year

July 15, 2008

NEW ORLEANS - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Whitworth University added another 2008 post-season honor to what must be two very full trophy cases as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday the men's 2008 Division III Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year.

Wisconsin-La Crosse earned the 2008 Indoor Scholar Team of the Year award after capturing the men's team title at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in March. Two weeks after capturing the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) indoor team title, the Eagles used a strong second day to capture their 14th NCAA Division III Indoor Championship. In the classroom, Wisconsin-La Crosse also had a strong season, finishing the year with a 3.018 team cumulative GPA.

In addition to Indoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year Wisconsin-La Crosse, 10 other teams with top-25 national finishes at the 2008 Division III Indoor Championships earned All-Academic Team honors for their academic and athletic performance.

Whitworth capped a banner year for the program with the additional honor of being named the 2008 Division III Outdoor Scholar Team of the Year. The Pirates finished third at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May, tying the highest-ever NCAA finish in any sport in Whitworth athletics history. Whitworth also won its first-ever Northwest Conference (NWC) Outdoor Track and Field team title in 2008.

Whitworth led a total of nine teams with top-25 finishes at the 2008 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships on the All-Academic Team list.

DIVISION III ALL-ACADEMIC TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS

In addition to the Scholar Teams of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the men's 2008 Division III All-Academic Track and Field Teams. A total of 57 Division III programs made up the men's 2008 All-Academic Teams.

Haverford College led all institutions with a 3.461 team cumulative GPA, followed by Carnegie Mellon with a 3.40 team GPA. Pomona-Pitzer Colleges achieved the third-highest team GPA with 3.391.

The Centennial Conference led all conferences with five teams selected as All-Academic Teams for 2008, followed closely by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the NWC with four team selections each.

The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements, with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the Division III Indoor or Outdoor National Championships and cumulative GPA.

To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative grade-point average.
