Mountain West Conference awards all-conference honors
April 23, 2008
FORT WORTH, TEXAS - Utah's Zach Ganger of the University of Utah men's tennis team was named Mountain West Conference co-Player of the year on Wednesday while earning all-MWC singles and doubles honors as well. After a great performance this year, senior Miron Mann also earned all-MWC singles and doubles honors. This is Ganger's third year in a row to garner singles and doubles awards and Miron's second time in his five-year career at the U.
Ganger, a senior and native to Jacksonville, Fla., played another great year of tennis including playing his third year in the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Tournament. The Ute also had a good showing at the Mountain West Regional Tournament before beginning dual matches in January. Since the start of the spring season, the Ute has had an outstanding season, finishing out the regular season with a 26-8 singles record. Ganger, who is currently ranked 116th nationally, went 6-0 in league matches at the No. 1 position and registered three victories vs. ranked opponents this season including Cotet of TCU 6-4, 4-1, previously ranked 35th in the country, and Eliott Wronski of UNLV 7-5, 7-6(2), previously 85th in the country.
Mann, a senior and native to Toronto, Ontario, has tallied a 12-10 season record between the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The Ute recently posted a season best win over Max Jones of New Mexico (6-4, 2-6, 6-4), previously ranked 41st in the nation. After the match against the Lobos, Mann continued his winning streak to finish 6-0 in league play, including his win that clinched the overall match over BYU. The Ute is currently on an eight-match winning streak as the team heads into the conference tournament.
In doubles play, Ganger and Mann are Utah's dynamic duo at the top position. The Utes have won their last eight matches in doubles play including a 6-0 run in league matches. Since pairing up in January at the start of dual matches, the Ute duo have been near unstoppable, posting a 16-4 overall record as they head into the conference tournament.
