OREM, Utah - The Utah softball team split a pair of games against Utah Valley on Monday, May 5, dropping game one 3-1 before a 7-6 win in eight innings in the second game.
Cherylyn McGraw's three-run home run in the third inning was the deciding hit of game one for Utah Valley (17-33). Utah (28-23) would cut the lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning. Kara Foster doubled to left field, scoring when Kristie Keller singled. The Utes left nine runners on base during the game, including loading the bases twice.
Devina Quintero was 2-for-4 in the first game. Ashley Smuda pitched six innings, earning the loss. She had eight strikeouts.
In game two, Utah was down 5-3 before scoring two runners in the fifth inning. Quintero hit an RBI double to score Sharee Fonoti, who walked earlier in the inning. Quintero would later score on an error to tie the game, 5-5.
Each team scored a run in the sixth to push the game to extra innings. Utah wasted no time scoring in the eighth inning. After Diana Phillips led off the inning with a walk, Quintero doubled to send Phillips across the plate for the game-winning run.
Brittany Parker started the second game at pitcher, throwing into the fifth inning. She was replaced by Smuda, who pitched the remainder of the game and earned the win. Smuda goes to 18-11 on the year with the win and loss.

Quintero again led the Utes in game two, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBI. On the day, she was 6-for-9 with four doubles.
The Utes return to the field on Thursday, May 8, taking on New Mexico. The doubleheader will be televised live on the Mtn., beginning at 5:00 pm.
