UTEP Football Shows Improvement At Scrimmage
April 26, 2008
Solid play on both sides of the ball highlighted an entertaining scrimmage for the UTEP football team at the Sun Bowl Saturday morning. "We are better than we were a year ago," UTEP head coach Mike Price said. "The offense is moving the ball better than I thought it would against the defense. I'm pleased that we played hard all the way to the last play." Donald Buckram provided plenty of excitement, scampering for 61 yards on only seven carries. Included among the runs was a 25-yard touchdown dash. Sophomore QB Trevor Vittatoe had an efficient day through the air, completing 14-of-18 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown. The score was courtesy of a six-yard strike to senior tight end Jamar Hunt. Kyle Wright also looked sharp, connecting on 6-of-13 tries for 90 yards. Redshirtfreshman Donavon Kemp paced the receiving corps with 84 yards on four grabs. Kris Adams also had four catches, which were good for 61 yards, while QB/WR James Thomas II made an impact with three catches and 25 yards. Nuuese Punimata had a monster day on the defensive side of the ball, compiling game-highs in tackles (11) and sacks (two). Senior LB Adam Vincent registered six stops, including a sack, while new Miner back Anthony Morrow registered four tackles and a sack. Melvin Stephenson II was involved with the lone turnover of the day, recovering a fumble. The Miners will return to the practice field on Tuesday, as they continue preparation for the Spring Game. The annual event will be played on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Sun Bowl, and admission is free.
