June 16, 2008

Former standout UTEP soccer player Jami Tullius has been chosen as a recipient of a Postgraduate Scholarship Award, it was announced by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky on Monday.

The league annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship Awards to graduates as selected by the Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors. The distinction is a fitting conclusion to the outstanding career by Tullius.

The native of El Paso, who graduated with honors as with a degree in mechanical engineering from UTEP, will continue her education at Rice University. She has been accepted to the institution's PhD program in mechanical engineering with a specialization in aeronautics.

A star with the Miners from 2004-07, Tullius is the only player in school history to top the 100-point barrier (114), and holds school standard for goals (48) and match-winning strikes (13). She was a two-time all-league performer and earned mention on the all-academic squad all four years.

She was named the 2007 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player in program annals to be so honored with the distinction. Tullius had a banner regular season, leading UTEP's prolific offense with 13 goals and eight assists for 34 point.

The 34 points paced C-USA, with the next closest player checking in with 25 points. Her total of 13 goals also led C-USA. Tullius managed to find time to be a playmaker too, registering eight assists to place third in the league. Tullius was especially impressive in Conference USA games. In nine league tilts, she racked up 20 points. The next closest player only tallied 15. Tullius did so with eight goals, two better than the No. 2 scorer, and shared the league lead with four helpers.
