EL PASO, Texas - Camilla Carrera blasted her seventh home run of the season but it was not enough, as Marshall defeated the Miners, 7-4 to win the series 2-1. UTEP falls to 21-12, 4-5 with the loss.

Carrera ended the day 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Jennifer Stalter sailed a long ball in the outing, her third of the season to add to the Miners' 33 in 2008. She ended 1-for-3.

The Miners utilized three hurlers on the day, Kelly Curran (4-3) who started, Nichole Tunget (7-2) who received the loss and Stacie Townsend (9-6) who came in relief. The three combined for just four strikeouts on the day while allowing seven runs on seven hits in the game.

UTEP out hit the Herd 9-7 and Marshall committed one error but the Miners left nine stranded including a bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the first. The Miners left two on base in the second and fourth innings and one in the third and fifth. UTEP put none on in the final two stanzas.

Marshall was first on the board in the top of the first off a two-run homer by Rachael Sofie.

The Miners scored in the bottom of the third after Ashley Ellis doubled and Amber Bennett hit the ball down the right field line allowing Ellis to score.

UTEP carried its momentum into the next inning with back-to-back solo homers by Stalter and Carrera. A strikeout later, Ashley Perez connected for her second hit of the day. Ellis singled down the leftfield line, sending Perez to second. With two outs on the board, a bad toss to first plated Perez for the unearned run and the 4-2 UTEP lead.

Marshall answered back with five runs in sixth inning including a grand slam home run by Kelly Nielson.

The Miners went 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh to fall 7-4.

UTEP will take a break from league action to play a two game series at Texas Tech on Tues., March 25. They return home on March 27 to take on former WAC foe Nevada in a doubleheader tilt. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
