Baseball Drops 7-6 Contest for Second Straight Day

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Utah Valley rallied late but couldn't erase a five-run deficit and dropped its third straight game, 7-6, at Dixie State on Monday.

The Wolverines (1-7-1) had a season-high 14 hits led by three from Jace Brinkerhoff and two each from Ryan Jones, Kevin Arendse and Tyler Garretson. Jordan Daley had three hits to lead the Rebels (10-5) while Mark Rose and two hits and drove in four runs.

Utah Valley led 2-1 when Rose hit a three-run home run to give the home team a 4-2 advantage. After Dixie State added two more an inning and a single run in the sixth, the Wolverines found themselves down 7-2.

UV mounted a rally in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs with Jones, Jake Rickenbach, Aaron Brady and Josh Hinckley all driving in runs.

Bryan Smith (0-2) took the loss on the mound while Travis Stapp improved to 3-1 with the win. Jayson Madson earned his first save after allowing just two hits over the final 2.2 innings. Freshman Peter Sundwall threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for Utah Valley.

Up next for the Wolverines is the River City Classic. They'll face Portland on Thursday in Davis, California to open the classic, hosted by UC Davis and Sacramento State. They'll also face in-state rival BYU on Friday, Sac State on Saturday and San Jose State on Sunday, with all three games in Sacramento.
