Late Runs Give Washington Decisive Win Over Wolverines

March 20, 2008

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. - Utah Valley dropped its second straight game and the first in a three-game series at Washington, 12-3, on Thursday night in Seattle. The Wolverines (4-13-1) played the Huskies (10-6) tight until a six-run eighth blew the game wide open.

Aaron Brady had two of the Wolverines' seven hits while Jace Brinkerhoff extended his hitting streak to 15 games for UV.

Bryan Smith (0-3) took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 while Ben Guidos (1-0) earned his first win after going five innings and allowing one run on just two hits. Paul Dickey worked the final four innings to earn his second save.

Washington scored twice in the second after Doug Cherry, in his first at-bat of the season, tripled to score Jarett Jackson. Michael Burgher then drove in Cherry with a bunt single to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

After UW scored a run in the third to take a 3-0 lead, the Wolverines got on the board in the fourth when Kevin Arendse drove in Kai Hatch on an RBI groundout.

The Huskies added another single run in the fifth before Utah Valley had its best chance to get back into the game. Brady singled home Brinkerhoff with one out and put runners at first and third with the score 4-2 Washington.

But with Arendse batting and a 3-1 count, Brady was caught trying to steal second and Arendse struck out to end the threat.

Kyle Conley drove in three runs for Washington, including two with a double in the eighth. Michael Burgher added three hits and two RBI for UW.

The Wolverines will play Portland on Friday at 2pm MT on Washington's field before the second game of the series against the Huskies at 6pm MT. Both games can be heard live at WolverineGreen.com.
