OREM, Utah - Utah Valley will try to end its four-game losing streak when NJIT comes to town on Thursday at 7:05pm MT. The game can be heard live at WolverineGreen.com. It has been over a month since the Wolverines (13-7) last played inside the McKay Center, where they are a perfect 9-0 this season. Their last "home" game was January 2nd, a 65-56 win over Nevada. The game played Monday, January 28th, a 66-64 upset loss to Chicago State, was supposed to be in the McKay Center before a campus-wide power outage forced the game to be moved to Timpanogos High School less than two hours before the originally scheduled 7pm tip-off. Against CSU, Utah Valley looked to be on its way to an easy victory, leading 48-28 early in the second half. But the Cougars held the Wolverines to 16 points over the final 16 minutes to earn the come-from-behind win. Robyn Fairbanks had 29 points and 15 rebounds while Sandy Marvin scored 18 points, including her 1,000th career point on a three-pointer late in the first half. Fairbanks is currently ranked fourth nationally in scoring at 24.3 points per game. She also ranks 21st in rebounds (9.8) and 23rd in field goal percentage (.561). Marvin ranks 10th in free-throw shooting at 89.0 percent. NJIT (6-13) is currently in its second season of reclassification after moving to Division I from Division II. The Highlanders, winners of two straight, have already surpassed last season's win total of six games and are 4-1 against fellow independent teams. Freshman Jessica Gerald, a four-time independent newcomer of the week winner, leads NJIT at 10.3 points per game. The Wolverines own a 2-0 series lead against the Highlanders, winning 79-48 at NJIT and 71-40 in Orem during the 2006-07 season. NJIT is one of six teams, including Utah Valley, that will compete at the year-end independent championship in Edinburg, Texas. Saturday's game against Texas-Pan American will be both Pack the House and Think Pink day in the McKay Center. Tip-off is 3:05 MT. The game against Chicago State was originally scheduled as Pack the House night but was changed due to the location change of that game. Also, in an effort to promote breast cancer awareness, the Utah Valley women's basketball team is participating the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) "Think Pink" campaign. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game against Texas-Pan American. $1 from each ticket sold will go to help breast cancer research locally in Utah. |
