Feb. 9, 2008

Box Score

ST. GEORGE, Utah - After a pair of narrow losses in its opening day, Utah Valley was on the winning side of two back-and-forth games as the Wolverines defeated Rhode Island, 11-5, and Idaho State, 5-4, in day two of the Red Desert Classic.

"The girls really answered for us today," UV head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "I felt we have played solid in our first two days. Today we came up with timely hits and executed when we needed to to get the wins. Alli (Bramwell) had another gutsy performance today."

Bramwell was credited with both wins for the Wolverines, now 2-2 on the season. Freshman Meghan Woodworth had another stellar day for Utah Valley with another three hits combined in the two games. Woodworth has started the season with a four-game hitting streak.

UV started the day with its victory over Rhode Island. The Wolverines built leads of 3-0 and 4-2 heading into the fifth inning. The Rams scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead before Bramwell came in and pitched UV out of fifth-inning jam.

The Wolverines scored three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to cruise to the 11-5 win. Junior Heidi Stocks led the Wolverines offensively as she went 3-for-4 from the plate with three doubles.

In the second game, the Wolverines and broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run fourth inning to give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead. Uv added insurance runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings and held off a seventh inning Idaho State rally to win the game 5-4.

Woodworth went 1-for-4 from the plate with 2 RBI for the Wolverines while Bramwell shined from the plate and the pitchers circle, recording a hit and RBI while picking up the complete-game win. Jessica Anderson and Cherylyn McGraw also had RBI for the Wolverines.

Utah Valley will conclude its games at the Red Desert Classic when the Wolverines take on Big Ten foe, Wisconsin Sunday at 11 a.m. (MT)
