Alfano's Record Breaking Jump Earns NEC Accolades

Junior Alaina Afano broke the Wagner long jump record witha 5.97 jump

March 19, 2008

Somerset, NJ - The 2008 NEC Indoor Championships' Most Valuable Performer Alaina Alfano (Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) not only set the Seahawks' long jump record with a 5.97m bound at the VCU Invitational but also earned the Northeast Conference (NEC) Field Athlete of the Week award. Her jump qualified her for not only the ECAC Championships, but also brought her just three centimeters from qualifying for the NCAA Regional standard.

The previous Wagner women's outdoor record in the long jump was previously held by Alfano who leaped 5.96m in 2006. In the 2007 outdoor season, Alfano reached the NCAA Regionals and finished 23rd in the long jump with a 5.75m effort. Alfano was the first female athlete at Wagner to compete at the NCAA Regionals. Seahawk legend Tara Maguire took part in the NCAA Championships back in 1991 prior to the advent of the regionals format.

Alfano will have a chance to better an already stellar peformance on March 20th where she and the rest of the Wagner Track & Field team compete at the Costal Carolina Shamrock Invitational.
