Second-Place Wagner to Host First-Place Sacred Heart in Thursday, 7:00 pm Showdown

Mark Porter is averaging 20.8 points per game in Wagner's last five contests.

Feb. 13, 2008

Coming off consecutive overtime victories over Mount St. Mary's and Quinnipiac, second-place Wagner (17-6, 10-2 NEC) plays host to first-place Sacred Heart (14-10, 11-2),winners of eight straight, in a game that may play a large role in determining seeds for next month's NEC Tournament.

Tonight's game marks the second meeting of the season between these clubs as Wagner posted a 70-63 win in Fairfield on Jan. 5. In Monday night's thrilling 82-70 OT win at Quinnipiac, junior guard Joey Mundweiler hit a threepoint jumper with 18 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 62-62 and then scored eight of his game-high 19 points in overtime as Wagner ran past Quinnipiac 82-70 in overtime.

The victory clinched a berth for Wagner in the NEC Tourney, and allowed the Seahawks to re-gain the best record in the NYC metro area with a 17-6 mark (.739), which is percentage points better than Rider;s 18-7 record (.720).

Senior guard Mark Porter, the reigning NEC Player of the Week, turned in yet another brilliant, workhouse performance. Following his career-high 44- minute outing during a 25-point outing in the win at Mount, Porter set another career high vs. QU by playing all 45 minutes, scoring six of his 18 points in OT while dishing out eight assists with just one turnover. Senior center Durell Vinson, who recently became the 17th player in NEC history to amass 1,000 points and 750 rebounds, is up to 1,028 career points, 33rd all-time at Wagner. Vinson has also pulled down 772 career rebounds and is within five boards of entering the Wagner top-10 (Jermaine Hall is 10th with 777).

Wagner is now 9-4 on the road this season. The school record for road wins in a season is 11, established by the 1968-69 team that went 11-5.

All five of Wagner's regular starters haved scored more than 750 career point. Two are over 1,000 (Porter - 1,435, senior center Durell Vinson, 1028), two more are over 800 (senior forward James Ulrich - 931 and junior swingman Jamal Smith - 822) while one is closing on 800 (junior guard Joey Mundweiler - 780).

Wagner leads the all-time series between the schools 11-8, including the victory in Fairfield earlier this season.
