Wagner Splits On Day One Of The NEC Tournament



Junior Brittany Frazza won her team-best sixth match of the year

West Windsor, NJ - No. 7 Wagner defeated No. 10 St. Francis (NY) 5-0 in women's outbracket play before losing to No. 2 LIU by a 4-0 count on day one of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tennis Championships at the Mercer County Tennis Center.

The Green & White are now 4-12 and will play No. 6 Monmouth in tomorrow's consolation play.

Junior Brittany Frazza (West Caldwell, NJ / Morris Catholic) shut out Tara Garone 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. At second singles, senior Marie Crane (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire) rolled over Jenna Charles 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Sarah Sproviero dominated Cathy Drakakis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Freshman Joanna Ciavarella won by forfeit at No. 6 singles to conclude singles play. Junior Emily Boyd (Stratham, NH / Exeter Area) and sophomore Valerie LeCureux (Jamison, PA / Central Bucks East) were each up 6-0, 5-0 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, when play was halted after Wagner clinched the win.

Sproviero and LeCureux combined to defeat Drakakis and Angel Lawrence 8-5 at No. 2 doubles while Boyd and Ciavarella won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point for Wagner. Frazza and Crane were up 7-0 at No. 1 doubles when the Green & White clinched the doubles point.

After winning its first match of the day, the Seahawks ran into the buzzsaw that is No. 2 LIU, losing 4-0 to the Blackbirds.

LIU won No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point. Ashley Harvey defeated Crane 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. H'Ann Johnson shut out Sproviero 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles before the Blackbirds clinched the win when Liliana Cortes defeated LeCureux 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

Frazza, Boyd and Ciavarella were all losing when play was halted.
