No. 4 Miami Takes Game Two, 23-2, Over Wake Forest

March 23, 2008

Box Score

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Wake Forest pitchers walked 15 batters and forced in seven runs as the No. 4-ranked Miami Hurricanes took game one of a doubleheader 23-2, Sunday morning at Mark Light Field.

The loss dropped the Demon Deacons to 11-9 overall and 4-4 in the ACC. The Canes moved to 17-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

Miami needed only 11 hits to plate its 23 runs. The Canes have now outscored the Deacons 40-6 in the weekend series.

It was déjà vu for the Deacs as they built a 2-0 lead for the second consecutive game against the Canes but couldn't hold on.

In the top of the first, Ben Terry led off the inning and was hit by a pitch from Miami starter Chris Hernandez. Dustin Hood followed with a walk, and a wild pitch to Willy Fox moved Terry to third and Hood to second with no outs. Fox then grounded out to the shortstop and Terry scored to make the score 1-0. With Weldon Woodall at the plate and two outs a passed ball allowed Hood to score, making it 2-0 Deacs.

The Canes tied the score in the bottom of the first when Jemile Weeks homered to left field after a Blake Tekotte single. The homer was Weeks' sixth of the year and marked the seventh of the series for Miami. Yonder Alonso would later score on a passed ball and a Ryan Jackson groundout scored Dennis Raben to give Miami a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the second, after Bullock walked Alonso, Raben connected for his fourth home run of the season to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Hurricanes.

The Deacs would send three different pitchers to the mound in the bottom of the third but none could find the strike zone. Miami scored nine runs in the inning, five of which were forced in on walks. After Wake starter Garrett Bullock was chased in the inning, Wake reliever Mark Adzick faced five batters and walked-in four runs.

Miami increased its lead in the bottom of the fifth when catcher Yasmani Grandal's home run to right made the score 17-2.

The Canes' tenth home run for the series came on pinch hitter Ryan Perry's grand slam to center field off Wake reliever Brandon Johnson in the bottom of the seventh. Miami led 23-2 after seven innings.

Bullock (2-1) took the loss. He went 2 1/3 innings, walked seven and gave up 10 runs on five hits.

Hernandez (4-0) pitched six innings, gave up one hit and struck out eight Deacon batters to earn the win.

Fox and Woodall had Wake Forest's two hits on the day. Fox drove in one of the two Deacon runs.

The final game of the three-game series between the Deacs and Canes will start at approximately 1:30 p.m.
