WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Wake Forest will look to pick up a pair of wins with two games during the upcoming mid-week. The Demon Deacons will play at Davidson on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before hosting Winthrop on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Wednesday's game against Winthrop will be broadcast live on internet-only radio at www.WakeForestSports.com.
Freshman LHP Mark Adzick is scheduled to start on Tuesday for the Demon Deacons. Davidson has yet to name a starting pitcher. The Deacs have not named a starter for Wednesday against Winthrop. The Eagles are scheduled to start RHP Wade Newman.
Wake Forest (13-21, 6-11) is coming off a 3-2 defeat of Virginia Tech on Sunday. The Deacons were able to salvage the final game of the weekend series when Steven Brooks scored on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.
Davidson comes in to the week at 8-22 overall. The Wildcats have lost 14 of their past 15 games, dating back to March 21. Davidson was swept in three games at The Citadel last weekend.
The Deacons lead the all-time series with the Wildcats, 50-11. The teams last met in 2006 when they split the two-game season series. Wake picked up a 14-6 win at Davidson on March 28 before falling to the Wildcats, 9-5, at home on April 18.
Allan Dykstra and Greg Young led the way in the Deacons' last trip to Davidson in 2006. Dykstra tied a school record with three home runs in the game, hitting a solo home run in the fourth inning, a three-run bomb in the fifth and another solo blast in the ninth.
Young, then a redshirt freshman, picked up the first win of his career with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. The lefty did not allow a hit while striking out one and walking one.
Matt Hammond held the Wildcats scoreless over 2 1/3 innings of relief in an 11-10 loss at Davidson in 2005.
Winthrop enters the mid-week at 15-20 overall. The Eagles, who do not have a game scheduled on Tuesday, are coming off a weekend series defeat of High Point. Winthrop took two of three games from the Panthers in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Eagles lead the all-time series with the Deacons, 5-3. Last year, the teams split the season series with each earning a road win. Wake defeated Winthrop, 10-8, on March 21 in Rock Hill. The Eagles avenged the setback with 15-9 win in Winston-Salem a week later.
Wake Forest and Winthrop were scheduled to play on March 4 this season in Rock Hill, but the game was canceled due to rain. A makeup date has not been set.
Dykstra has feasted on Winthrop pitching in his career. In three contests against the Eagles, Dykstra has gone 6-for-10 with six runs, five RBIs and three home runs. He has slugged 1.500 and reached base at a clip of .667. Dykstra hit two home runs in last year's meeting in Winston-Salem.
Dustin Hood and Brett Linnenkohl have also fared well at the plate against Winthrop. Hood has gone 4-for-11 with two runs, two RBIs and a .500 on-base percentage. Linnenkohl has gone 6-for-20 with four runs, four RBIs, a home run, a triple and a stolen base.
The Demon Deacons return to ACC play this weekend, traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for a three-game series against the Virginia Cavaliers. The games on Friday and Saturday can be heard live on 98.1 FM WBRF and at www.WakeForestSports.com. Sunday's broadcast is an internet-only broadcast.
