WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
After a full-padded practice on Tuesday, the Wake Forest football team had a lighter contact session on Wednesday afternoon, downsizing to helmets and shoulder pads. The Demon Deacon coaching staff focused largely on defensive drills in addition to continuing work on fundamentals at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex.
"Our defense had the better practice day," Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe said. "They made a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage and caused a lot of problems to the offense. We put the offense behind the chains and made them work a little bit harder. Aaron Curry made a lot of plays. The linebackers as a group had a great practice."
Wednesday was the fifth spring practice session for Wake Forest and though the team has shown inconsistencies in performance, Grobe is satisfied with the team's drive and work ethic.
"Our guys are enthusiastic, they have fun being out here. The best thing we've got going right now is a bunch of guys that are really enjoying practice," Grobe said.
"I'd like to see more consistency. Right now we look good sometimes and other times we look like Hogan's goat. But this early in spring practice the defense is ahead of the offense a little bit. The things we're seeing are not to be unexpected."
Tomorrow, the Deacons will have a more physical practice with full padding. The first informal scrimmage will be on Saturday at BB&T Field at 10:30 a.m.
