Wake Forest Set to Defend Hootie at Bulls Bay Title

March 22, 2008

Live Scoring

The No. 14 Wake Forest men's golf team, fresh off its come-from-behind victory at the General Jim Hackler Championship, will head to Awendaw, S.C. this weekend for the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, an event the Deacs have won the past two seasons.

Wake will send seniors Webb Simpson and Chris McCartin, junior Dustin Groves, and sophomores Brendan Gielow and Travis Wadkins to defend the Deacs' title.

Teams will play the par-72, 7,282-yard Bulls Bay Golf Course. The first round of the 54-hole event is scheduled for Sunday, the second round will be Monday and the final round has been set for Tuesday.

Simpson is coming-off an impressive performance at the Arnold Palmer Invitational that saw the amateur finish tied for 31st after firing a two-under 68 in the final round. Simpson leads the Deacs with a 70.2 stroke average per 18 holes. The senior finished tied for second at the Hootie last season after carding a seven-under 206.

McCartin shot a six-over 219 last season in Awendaw to finish tied for 36th. One year ago, McCartin, along with Gielow and Sean Moore, birdied the third hole of a sudden death playoff with Baylor to give the championship to the Deacs. Baylor will join the Hootie field again this year.

Groves and Gielow shot one-under 212s in last year's Hootie to finish tied for 13th. Gielow is currently second on the squad with a 72.2 stroke average per 18 holes and Groves is third with an average of 73.4.

Wadkins is the lone participant who did not play in the Hootie last season. His one-under 71 propelled Wake to the win two weeks ago in Myrtle Beach.

The Deacs will face ACC foes No. 12 Duke, No. 21 Clemson, North Carolina and Virginia Tech as well as SEC participants No. 16 South Carolina, Kentucky, Auburn and LSU. College of Charleston, Clemson and South Carolina will co-host the three-day event.

A high of 66 degrees and partly cloudy skies has been projected for Sunday's first round.
