The Wake Forest men's golf team shot a four-under 284, the fifth-best 18-hole total for the Deacs on the season, to finish tied for fourth after the first round of the ACC Championship at Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C.
Webb Simpson's four-under 68 tied the senior for second place in the race for individual honors. The round ties for eighth-best by a Deacon golfer on the year. The Raleigh-native birdied four holes and did not shoot over par on any hole on the par-72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club Course.
Simpson trails NC State's Matt Hill by one stroke entering Saturday's second round.
Chris McCartin is in contention for the individual title after his two-under 70 in the first round. The senior is currently tied for 10th place after recording four birdies and an eagle on hole number 11.
Sophomore Brendan Gielow fired a one-under 71 to land in a tie for 15th. The round was Gielow's best since a 69 in the final round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational in February.
Sophomore Travis Wadkins fired a three-over 75 to finish the first round in a tie for 37th place.
Junior Dustin Groves posted a four-over 76 Friday and will enter the second round tied for 47th place.
Duke and Florida State lead the field after shooting nine-under 279s Friday. The Deacs are knotted in fourth place with NC State in Clemson entering Saturday's second round.
A high of 74 degrees and a 60 percent chance of afternoon rain showers has been projected for Uwharrie Point Saturday by Weather.com.
The Deacs will tee-off Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
