W-S Mayor Declares Feb. 7 WFU Men's Soccer Day

Feb. 7, 2008

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem mayor Allen Joines has officially declared Thursday, February 7, 2008 Wake Forest Men's Soccer Team Day.

The honor comes in recognition of the Demon Deacon's National Championship in December for the first time in program history. Wake Forest, led by head coach Jay Vidovich, finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation with a record of 22-2-2, the best mark in WFU soccer history.


WHEREAS: 2007 marked a momentous and historic year for The Wake Forest Demon Deacon Men's Soccer Team; and

WHEREAS: The Wake Forest's Men's Soccer Team won its first ever NCAA College Cup Title with a 2-1 win over The Ohio State University on December 16, 2007; and

WHEREAS: Wake Forest's goalkeeper, Brian Edwards was named the NCAA College Cup's Most Outstanding Defensive Player; and

WHEREAS: Wake Forest's Marcus Tracy was named the NCAA College Cup's Most Outstanding Offensive Player; and

WHEREAS: Five Demon Deacon players, Cody Arnoux, Sam Cronin, Brian Edwards, Zach Schilwaski, and Marcus Tracy, were named to the College Cup All-Tournament team; and

WHEREAS: Wake Forest's Men's Soccer Head Coach, Jay Vidovich, was named the 2007 NSCAA Coach of the Year; and

WHEREAS: Wake Forest's Men's Soccer Team earned the FieldTurf's Team of the Year Award for 2007 for their passion for the sport and dedication to team play; and

WHEREAS: Three Demon Deacon players, midfielder/defender Pat Phelan, goalkeeper Brian Edwards, and defender Julian Valentin, were picked in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft; and

WHEREAS: Coach Vidovich won the 2008 Walt Chyzowych Achievement Award, for his lifelong dedication to preserving the spirit of the game of soccer, advancing its level of play and promoting its growth and development; and

WHEREAS: This Proclamation is hereby awarded to the Wake Forest University Men's Soccer team in recognition of an outstanding and award winning year;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ALLEN JOINES, Mayor of the City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim Thursday, February 7, 2008 as

Wake Forest University's Men's Soccer Team Day
