Wake Turns Back Hokies 4-2 in ACC Quarterfinals

April 18, 2008

Final Stats

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The score was 3-2, and had been 3-2 for what seemed like an eternity. The Wake Forest men's tennis team was looking for one more match win to take the ACC Championships quarterfinal victory from the Hokies on Friday afternoon when junior Cory Parr nailed a service ace that pushed him over Nicolas Delgado de Robles in the third set, keeping the Demon Deacons alive for the semifinal match against No. 1 Virginia on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The match win at No. 2 was Parr's second victory over Robles in less than a week's time.

With the 4-2 decision, the Demon Deacons improved to 17-9 while the Hokies bowed out of the tourney with a 15-8 record for 2008.

After trading opening games at No. 3 doubles, WFU Freshman Jonathan Wolff and sophomore Jason Morgenstern charged ahead to an 8-2 victory, but a close 8-6 loss from Carlos Salmon and Mariusz Adamski at No. 2 evened the doubles score.

The point was left to be decided by Wake Forest's ninth-ranked duo of Steve Forman and Parr and Virginia Tech's Brandon Corace and Pedro Graber at No. 1. The Hokies stayed up a break for the first games, but the Deacs were able to break serve three times to finish with an 8-6 victory, putting Wake Forest up 1-0 heading into singles.

After upending 42nd-ranked Albert Larregola in straight sets just one week earlier, sophomore Steven Forman struggled at the top of the Wake Forest lineup and fell 6-0, 6-1 to the Virginia Tech standout to knot the match score at 1-1.

Sophomore Andrew Brasseaux posted an early lead over VT's Corace at No. 6 and didn't look back, pushing Wake Forest ahead in contest with a 6-3, 6-2 win. It was a quality victory for the Covington, La. native, who fell in three sets to the Virginia Tech junior during the regular season.

WFU senior Mariusz Adamski dropped two sets to Yoann Re at No. 3 before Wolff countered with a winning 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 5 to put Wake Forest with in one match victory of the quarterfinal win.

After splitting sets with Robles at No. 2, Parr finished 6-2 in the third set to add the fourth and final Wake Forest victory.

On Saturday, the Demon Deacons will face No. 1 seed Virginia, who finished the regular season with a perfect 11-0 conference record.
