WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Wake Forest women's basketball team will host its second top-five match-up of the 2007-08 season on Thursday with third-ranked North Carolina at 7 p.m.
In their last outing, The Tar Heels (18-2, 5-0) edged fourth-ranked Maryland in double-overtime with a 97-86 win. UNC senior LaToya Pringle earned ACC Player of the Week honors for her career high 31 points in the Saturday victory. The Demon Deacons (13-9, 0-7) followed up an 85-41 victory over Savannah State on January 24 with a 63-38 loss at NC State last Sunday.
When the Deacons and Tar Heels met last season, then-No. 4 UNC defeated Wake Forest 96-47 in Chapel Hill. Former Deacon Yolanda Lavender had the game-high 20 points, while UNC's Erlana Larkins was the high-rebounder with 12 caroms.
The Deacons have faced two other Top 10 teams this season. On November 23, Wake Forest pulled a 53-46 upset over No. 10 Texas A&M at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. The Demon Deacons then kicked-off conference season with a home contest against then-fifth ranked Maryland on January 3. The Deacs dropped the contest 83-49.
UNC holds a 55-12 advantage in the all-time series since its beginning in 1974. Wake's first-ever win over the Tar Heels came in January of 1988, and the Demon Deacons followed with five back-to-back victories through 1990. Since 2000, WFU has beaten the Tar Heels four times, all at home, with the most recent win occurring on January 26, 2004.
The next game on tap for the Deacons will be road contest at Clemson on February 3 at 2 p.m.
