The Wake Forest women's basketball team will host the NC State Wolfpack on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) for the second annual "Think Pink" game. Fans are invited to wear pink to participate in breast cancer awareness.
The Wolfpack is 16-9 overall and 4-6 in conference action this season and will enter Sunday's match-up with back-to-back wins in Raleigh over Miami (51-45) and Boston College (60-41). Senior Khadijah Washington continues to lead the pack on the stat sheet, averaging 17 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
The Demon Deacons (14-12, 1-10) have had the most success this season at the Joel, posting a 9-5 home record. The last conference win for Deacs was on February 7 in Winston-Salem, where freshman Brittany Waters led Wake Forest with a career high 15 points. Most recently, Wake Forest dropped a road contest to the Blue Devils, taking a 71-36 loss.
NC State leads 56-7 since the all-time series began in 1973. The teams are 1-1 at the Joel Coliseum since 2006. The Demon Deacons' most recent victory over NC State (home or away) was January 7, 2006 in Winston-Salem (65-64).
When the two teams met earlier this season, NC State took a 63-38 win at Reynolds Gym. Wolfpack members Khadijah Whittington and Megan Zullo led the game with 12-points a piece, while Mekia Valentine was the high Demon Deacon scorer with 11 points. Wake Forest junior Corinne Groves was the game's leading rebounder with 11 caroms, while Whittington had 10 for the Pack.
Think Pink
The WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year of "Think Pink" a success. The 2008 initiative has already unified over 600 women's basketball teams for the cause.
Tickets are only $1 per person and fans are invited to wear pink. All proceeds collected at the game will be donated to Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test.
