The No. 10 Wake Forest women's golf team shot a 294, its best round of the three-day LSU/Cleveland Classic, but it wasn't enough to give the Deacs their second team victory of the season as the team finished third in Baton Rouge.

The final round 294 is the Deacons' best total since a 293 in the final round of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in October of 2007.

The third-place finish matches two previous finishes for the Deacs at the par-72 University Club since 2002. The Deacs finished third in Baton Rouge in the NCAA East Regionals in 2002 and 2007.

"I think we played OK. We had our chances to do a little bit better but third is not bad," Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey said. "We're playing respectably but we need to play a little bit better to win. We need to be sharper around the greens."

Wake finished the weekend with a three-day total of 894, 10 strokes back from tournament champion Florida State. Wake cut the Seminole lead to six strokes after nine holes Sunday but never got closer.

Nannette Hill led the Deacs in Sunday's final round with a two-under 70. The junior finished tied for 22nd.

"Nannette played very well," Dailey said. "She played very solidly, she missed some putts, but overall her game was very solid."

Senior Laura Crawford was the top performer for Wake Forest and finished tied for 11th place after carding a 75 in the final round. Crawford shot 70-78-75=223 (+7) for the three-day event.

Jean Chua joined Hill in 22nd place after carding a 77 Sunday. The junior shot 76-73-77=226 (+10) for the tournament and recorded her best finish of the season.

Natalie Sheary finished tied for 26th place after shooting a 76 for the final round. The freshman recorded a three-day total of 227, 11-over par, and finished a tournament out of the top 20 for the first time since the Mason Rudolph Championship in September.

Freshman Allie Bodemann shot her best round of the weekend, a 73, to finish tied for 70th.

Wind was a factor early in the final round and was gusting directly at competitors. Dailey pointed to instances where four-irons were being used when nine-irons would normally be selected.

The Seminoles' Caroline Westrup took individual honors with an eight-under 208 for the tournament. Westrup shot a 67 in the final round.

Wake will return to action March 21-23 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate at the University of Georgia Club in Athens.

"If we could be sharper in the short game, we could be winning," Dailey said. "We're so close and have been in contention every event. But overall, the team is getting better and learning every week."
