The No. 10 Wake Forest women's golf team carded a 300 Friday in the first round of the LSU/Cleveland Classic to tie for second place heading into Saturday's second round.

"We left some shots on the course today but we'll get them back tomorrow," Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey said. "We missed some short puts. We had a good practice this afternoon but we'll need to play with more consistency if we want to catch Florida State."

Teams played in what Dailey called "very windy" conditions.

Laura Crawford shot a two-under 70 in the first round to tie Florida State's Whitney Wright for the individual lead. The senior is looking to become the third Deacon golfer in the past four events to garner individual honors.

Friday's round was the best in relation to par for Crawford since a three-under 69 in the first round of Landfall Tradition in October.

"Laura Crawford played very well. Her round was really strong," Dailey said. "She is hitting the ball extremely well and with the conditions, it was a very, very good round."

Juniors Jean Chua and Nannette Hill are tied for 23rd following four-over 76s on the par-72, 6,511-yard University Club Course.

Freshman Natalie Sheary recorded a six-over 76 to land in a tie for 46th. Allie Bodemann is 89th after shooting a 16-over 88 and was penalized four strokes for having an extra club in her golf bag.

The Deacs, along with tournament host LSU, trail Florida State by seven strokes. The Seminoles shot a 293 on the day.

Wake Forest is looking for its second win of the 2007-08 season. The first came in the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. in the last event of the fall semester.

The Deacs will tee-off Saturday around 9:30 a.m.

The weather in Baton Rouge should be pleasant Saturday with a projected high of 82 degrees and a 10 percent of precipitation, according to weather.com.
