Spartanburg, S.C. -
On Wednesday, the Southern Conference's track & field coaches selected Western Carolina's Dominique Young as the Male Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Month for January.
Young, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., ran a 6.74 in the 60-meter dash at the UNC Joe Hilton Invitational. His time was a NCAA provisional qualifying, a new Western Carolina school record and the top time in the Southern Conference. Young ran a 21.54 in the 200-meters at the East Tennessee State Niswonger Invitational, which is second best in the Southern Conference.
He is also a member of the top ranked 4x400 meter relay team, which took home top honors at the Niswonger Invitational in a time of 3:16.94, the second-best time for a WCU team in the past two seasons combined.
Young and the rest of the WCU Track & Field team will travel to Boone, N.C., this weekend to compete in the Appalachian State Limited Open. They will hope to replicate their success from the first meet in Boone back in December, where the two squads combined for 10 wins, 19 podium finishes, and 50 top-tens, including a 1-2-3 finish in the men's 60-meter dash, won by Zeb Johnson with a time of 6.25 second, followed by Young in second Manteo Mitchell rounding out the top three. Young also finished first at the event in the 200-meter dash in 21.92 seconds.
