WCU's Zeb Johnson Named Southern Conference Track & Field Athlete of the Week

April 24, 2008

Cullowhee, N.C. - Following a week in which he won a pair of races at the Catamount Classic and qualified for the NCAA East Regionals for the third and fourth time, the Southern Conference's track & field coaches selected senior Zeb Johnson as the men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week.

The Charlotte, N.C., native won the 400-meters at the Catamount Classic with a NCAA regional qualifying time of 46.66. Johnson was also a part of the 4x100-meter relay team that ran a NCAA regional qualifying mark of 40.00. The team also set a new Catamount Athletic Complex record with their time.

In addition to his times this weekend, he has also qualified for the East Regionals in the 200-meters and 100-meters. He is tied with teammate Manteo Mitchell for the most events qualified for on the team.

This is the third outdoor honor for Johnson in his illustrious career, to go along with a pair of indoor weekly honors and the Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Month for January, 2007. He was also named the SoCon Freshman of the Year during his rookie campaign, and was the 2006 SoCon Indoor Track MVP.

Overall, Johnson has the fastest time by a Catamount this season in two individual events, the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, and is a part of the two relay teams that have posted the top marks on the squad this year. He has also broken the school records in the 4x400-meter (3:07.66), and the 4x100-meter (39.87) relays. In his four years, he has held over four different school record marks, three of which are still standing.

Johnson also has the fastest time in the Southern Conference in the 400-meters (46.66) and is a part of the 4x100-meter relay team that has the fastest time in the Southern Conference this season.

This weekend, Johnson and his teammates will welcome the rest of the Southern Conference to Cullowhee for the 2008 SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships, to be held Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Both the WCU Men's and Women's teams will be defending their 2008 SoCon Indoor Championships, and the Men will look to repeat their outdoor victory from last season.
