Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina sophomore left-handed pitcher Chris Masters was today named the Southern Conference co-Pitcher of the Week, sharing honors with Furman's Jay Jackson as released by the conference office. The honor is the second of this season for both Masters and the Catamounts, while also marking the third weekly award of his career.
The southpaw from Marietta, Ga., worked a perfect 4.2 innings of work in two appearances last week, retiring all 14 batters in which he faced. On Friday against arch-rival Appalachian State, Masters threw two thirds of an inning, striking out one, in relief. He came on in the seventh inning in game two of Sunday's double-header with Western trailing, 4-1, and proceeded to shut down the Mountaineer hitters allowing the Catamounts to rally. Masters pitched four perfect 1-2-3 innings, striking out three with four ground ball and two foul outs.
Masters also recorded his first career at-bat on Sunday after defensive changes forced the pitcher's slot to come up in the order. He came within a foot of lining a double down the right field line before striking out swinging on a 2-2 pitch.
On the season, Masters has a team-best 4.54 earned run average in 41.2 innings pitched. He also boasts a team-high 45 strikeouts with a 4-3 overall record and two saves.
Western Carolina steps out of conference for a pair of mid-week games before diving back into SoCon action this weekend. On Tuesday, the Catamounts will again welcome former WCU coaching legend, Jack Leggett, and the Clemson Tigers to Childress Field / Hennon Stadium. WCU downed the Tigers for just the third-time in the series history at Doug Kingsmore Stadium last Tuesday evening, 6-2. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance as demand will be high for this contest.
WCU hits the road on Wednesday to face the Mercer Bears in Macon, Ga., with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm. The game will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard locally on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 or online at www.WWCUFM.com.
The Catamounts return home for a three-game set against the Furman Paladins on a busy weekend in Cullowhee. Game times are 7:00 pm on Friday, 6:00 pm on Saturday and 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon. WCU will also host Furman in softball action Saturday and Sunday in addition to hosting the 2008 Southern Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
