Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship - Round 1 Results

Sophomore Ricky Stout shot a two-under, 70, on Sunday to lead Western Carolina to a fourth-place standing at the 72nd-annual Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship being played at the par 72, 7,062 Country Club of South Carolina. Second round action commenced on Monday morning, with the third and final round slated for Tuesday afternoon.
Nationally-ranked Chattanooga leads the 10-team field entering Monday's second round after firing a two-over, 290, as a team on Sunday. Furman and the College of Charleston each posted rounds of 291 to stand tied for second, one-stroke in arrears at 291, with Western Carolina (295) and UNC Greensboro (296) rounding out the top five.
Stout was one of only five golfers to shoot under par on Sunday, countering three bogies on No. 7, No. 8 and No. 10 with five birdies to shoot the two-under. His 70 was just one stroke off his career-best. UNC Greensboro's Nathan Stamey leads the 50-golfer field with a three-under 69 on Sunday, followed by Stout, Furman's Ben Goforth and UTC's Fredrik Qvicker tied for second.
WCU junior Andres Cuenca carded an opening round of two-over, 74, to stand tied for 15th with senior Matt Cook shooting 75, tied for 21st. Making their first-ever appearances at the conference championship, freshman Caleb Marsh shot 76 to stand tied for 27th with junior Dustin Furnari firing 77, tied for 34th.
