CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball placed a league-best three players on the Southern Conference Sports Media Association's (SCSMA) All-Conference Teams. Senior Chevon Keith was a First Team selection while fellow senior Monique Dawson was voted to the Second Team. Emily Clarke was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Keith reached the 1,000-point milestone on February 23 against Georgia Southern and became just the third player in Western Carolina women's basketball history to have over 1,000 points and 900 rebounds. She is currently ranked third in the Lady Catamount record books for rebounds in a career with 917. She is averaging 8.8 rebounds per game which ranks first in the Southern Conference.
Keith tallied a season-high seven double-doubles this season and pulled down double figure rebounds in 13 of the 30 regular season games. She also scored in double figures 12 times.
Dawson hit the 1,000-point plateau earlier this season as well. She currently has 1,164 points in her career and ranks 14th in the Lady Cat record books. She is averaging 10.4 points per game this season and is ranked 11th in the Southern Conference. She scored in double figures 16 times and notched 20 points in two games.
Clarke has had a solid freshman campaign. She has scored in double figures eight times including three-times tallying her career-high of 14 points. She has led the team in scoring four times and connected on a career-high three three-pointers against Chattanooga on February 28.
Chattanooga's Alex Anderson was named the Southern Conference Sports Media Association's (SCSMA) women's basketball Player of the Year while Lady Mocs' head coach Wes Moore was voted Coach of the Year. Wofford's Mahagony Williams, who led all Southern Conference freshmen in both scoring (8.3 points per game) and rebounding (6.6 rebounds per game), was honored as the Freshman of the Year.
Western Carolina will open play at the 2008 Southern Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Friday at 10.m. at North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, S.C. The Lady Catamounts are the No. 2 seed in the tournament and await the winner between No. 7 seed Furman and No. 10 seed Wofford.
